Mystery Shopping - Is It Lying?
As a mystery shopping expert and author of 4 mystery shopping books I get a lot of interesting emails from fans who seek advice on being a mystery shopper.
One I got yesterday really got me thinking. The person wanted to know if he was going to have to lie and be dishonest to be a mystery shopper. They were very interested in getting into mystery shopping as a supplemental income, but didn't want to do it if it meant having to lie.
Now some people might say that you're lying when you do a mystery shop because your very reason for being there is a secret. I look a it differently. I told the person that you’re not lying when you’re mystery shopping. Think of it as being an actor preparing for a role for a movie, and you’re assuming another persona in order to play the role that’s in the script.
In addition, I advised them that you can always choose the shops you take on, so if there’s one where you feel strongly goes against what you feel is something that's totally out of synch with who you are, you shouldn’t do it, and instead take on one you’re good with. For example, I choose not to eat red meat, so I would probably pass on a restaurant shop for a steakhouse.
What do you think? Are mystery shoppers liars? Please comment.
